- Barn vs. Shelter
Many investors and farmers use “barn” and “shelter” interchangeably, but the two structures differ fundamentally in architecture, ventilation, equipment and day-to-day operations.
Definitions
A barn houses dairy and beef cattle—large ruminants. A shelter houses small ruminants such as sheep and goats.
Architectural Differences
- Ceiling height: Typically 6–8 m in barns, 4–6 m in shelters.
- Span & layout: Free-stall or pen systems in barns; free-group or slatted floor systems in shelters.
- Subdivision: Individual stall dimensions in dairy; group pens dominate in small ruminants.
Ventilation Differences
In dairy, heat stress is the main challenge—HVLS fans and wide clear spans are critical. In small ruminants, moisture and ammonia buildup matter most, so high ceilings and natural air circulation are essential.
The Mila Entegre Approach
We engineer both structure types with the same discipline, but with clearly different design parameters.
